Bret Michaels, frontman of the music band Poison, has had one heck of a bad month.
It started Sunday, April 11th in San Antonio, Texas. Michaels was complaining of stomach pains as he prepared to go onstage at Sea World. The singer was rushed to the hospital later that night, and doctors were luckily able to remove his engorged appendix before it burst.
Just several weeks after surgery (Thursday, April 22nd), Bret was complaining of a headache and was eventually taken to the hospital for tests. The doctors concluded that he’d suffered from a brain hemorrhage at the base of his skull, which is basically a form of stroke.
The singer has since been in stable condition, but doctors are now concerned about a new condition which has emerged, called hyponatremia. This is a lack of sodium in the blood, which can lead to seizures. Michaels is currently being watched 24-hours by hospital staff, but will continue to be in danger for the next few months.
Michaels body is working to reabsorb the excess blood in his brain, doctors tell the media, which is a very painful process that can take months up to a year to complete. Fifty percent of patients who suffer from this kind of hemorrhaging will have a relapse in bleeding, which will leave them with little chance of survival.
Michaels, also a Type 1 Diabetes sufferer, may have added to the risk of this form of stroke by his reported excessive drinking and smoking. You can receive up to date information on his condition through his website, BretMichaels.com.
We here at Celebulicio wish him a quick and clean recovery.
